Dry skin isn’t usually serious, but it can be uncomfortable and unsightly.

Fortunately, most dry skin is caused by environmental factors that can be at least partially controlled. These factors include hot or cold weather, low humidity, and soaking in hot water.

1. Petroleum jelly. Petroleum jelly is a mineral oil and is great as a moisturizer, soaking deep into the skin. Both Medical News Today and the Mayo Clinic recommend this as a way to fight dry skin. Petroleum jelly is really thick and feels greasy, so you may want to use it at night only.

2. Sunflower seed oil. Sunflower seed oil is excellent for hydrating the skin. According to the U.S. National Library of Health and Medicine, sunflower seed oil is better for the skin than olive oil. ‘‘Prevention’’ recommends applying the oil directly to the skin. You may want to use it on your torso, arms and legs and avoid your face and areas where pores can be easily clogged as it can clog them.

3. Coconut oil. A natural emollient, coconut oil is an excellent moisturizer and can be used daily on even highly sensitive skin. ‘‘Healthline’’ says you can use it straight, or you can combine it with other ingredients if you want.

4. Aloe vera. Medical News Today points out that aloe vera might also help relieve dry skin. You can apply aloe vera gel directly to the skin, or create a moisturizer as ‘‘Comfort Life Chanel’’ does by combining 2 tablespoons coconut oil and 3 tablespoons aloe vera gel and mixing them thoroughly.

5. Oatmeal. If dry, itchy skin is driving you crazy, try taking an oatmeal bath. ‘‘Healthline’’ shares how oatmeal has anti-inflammatory properties that help soothe dry, itchy skin. Livestrong.com recommends using 1 cup of raw oatmeal either ground to a powder or unground and tied in a sock and placed in a tub of warm water.

6. Yogurt. Yogurt has properties that help with dry skin. WebMD recommends combining 1 teaspoon turmeric, 6 ounces yogurt, 2 tablespoons honey and 1/2 cup oat flour to create a mask. Place this on the dry skin and let it sit for 15 minutes. Clean it off with a warm, wet cloth.

7. Honey. Honey is great for fighting skin infections and as a moisturizer according to Medical News Today. ‘‘ChloeX’’ combines 1 tablespoon yogurt with 1 teaspoon honey to make a face mask. Apply the mask for 15 minutes and remove with a warm, wet cloth. If you suffer from dry skin, you can add an extra teaspoon of yogurt.
