SPIDER VEINS AND HOW TO TREAT THEM
Spider veins usually occur on the legs or the area around the ankles. Statistically, around 55% of women and 45% of men experience this condition. In most cases the spider veins are painless and they can retreat without any treatment, but sometimes the can be associated with other symptoms like itching or burning. Visiting a doctor is always a good decision, but unless it is absolutely necessary, you can still go for a natural treatment with one of the remedies described below.
What are spider veins?
Spider veins can appear in a form similar to tree branches or a spider web, and you can recognise them by their colour, which can be either red, blue or purple. Sometimes they can be mistaken for varicose veins, as a result of the similar appearance and allocation , but spider veins, also known as angioectasis, are a lot smaller. The reason they are localised on the skin’s surface of the legs, especially in their lower parts is that the lower part of the body is affected by the body weight, and the influence of the gravity to the process of the blood movement up to the heart. Apart from this, it is not unusual for the spider veins to appear on the face too.
Factors that induce spider veins occurrence
A lot of factors are involved in the spider veins forming, but unfortunately not all of them can be avoided. Here are the most common factors:
– Genetic predisposition
– Hormonal disbalance – as a regular response to life period transitions (puberty, pregnancy, menopause)
– Some professions that require a prolonged standing
– Contraceptive pills
– Poor blood circulation and blood clods
Natural remedies for spider veins
Remedies that are applicable locally:
- Apple cider vinegar (ACV ):
In a study conducted in 2016 it is shown that the localised application of ACV helped the conservative treatment prescribed by doctors, by increasing its effect. The patients from the experimental group were submitted to a ACV application directly to the affected area, along with the medical treatment at the same time, while the control group was left without any treatment. An increased effect of the conservative treatment was detected 3 months later in the experimental group, and no side effects were noticed.
To prepare this remedy you need raw unprocessed ACV and towel. Dip the towel in the ACV , place it all over the concerned area and leave it there for around 15 to 20 minutes. You need to do this 2 times a day, everyday until the spider veins are eliminated.
* Warning: If the veins are located on the face or if you skin is easily irritable, mix the ACV with water to dilute it, and shorten the time of its activity.
Alternatively, you can drink the ACV. To drink it you need to make a solution out of 1 teaspoon ACV and cup of warm water. You can also add 1 teaspoon of honey to sweeten the drink, but if you can handle sour taste you can make the drink stronger by using 1 tabelspoon of ACV insted of 1 teaspoon. Prepared like this you need to consume one or two cups a day right before you eat. Decreasing of the inflammation of the veins can be detected after a month or two.
- Witch hazel:
The witch hazel contains a lot of tannins and volatile oils which have a positive effect in treating the spider veins. It is an anti-inflammatory herb, and it is known by the constricting effect it has over the veins.
You can either use hazel extract or prepare your own hazel solution if you get couple of hazel leaves and let them boil in water for a couple of minutes. Regardless of you hazel choice, you need to tap a cotton ball into the extract/solution and apply it over the spider veins. This procedure needs to be repeated few times every day.
- Lemon oil:
Spider veins are basically weakened capillary walls, and the lemon oils help with their strengthening. For this purpose you need to add lemon oil into base oil derived from jojoba, almond or coconut and mix them. Apply the oil mixture to the veins and massage the affected area few times a day.
- Horse chestnut seeds:
It is used as a combination of witch hazel and a tincture of horse chestnuts to keep the capillary walls intact. The enzymes tend to damage the walls but the seeds of the horse chestnuts has active compounds that interfere with the enzyme’s activity. The mixture is made with of 10 parts hazel and 1 part chestnut, and you need to apply it to the spider veins.
- Mustard oil:
The mustard oil is better to use it together with a base oil. For this mixture you need only few drops of mustard oil. The application is localised on the affected area, and it is recommended to be practised twice a day. This way you will enhance the blood circulation in the veins, which will also result in removing the red lines.
To get rid of the spider webs, a local intervention is not enough, you need to improve the full blood circulation in your body. Engaging your body into exercises, swimming or walking, and treating it with different herbs is a promising combination. Here are few products you can use to improve the blood flow in the whole body:
Ginger is used to fight the high blood pressure, but it can have some side effects when using it together with prescribed medication, so you need to get advice from the doctor before using it. To avoid this problem, you can use smaller portions of the ginger or powdered ginger extract, and combine it with food and different kind of beverages.
- Ginkgo biloba:
The overall blood circulation can be put in order with ginkgo biloba usage, 40 miligrams of its standardised extract (50:1) every day. This routine has to continue until there are some visible effects. Except for the blood circulation, ginkgo biloba has positive effects with strengthening the vein walls also.
- Horse chestnut:
The recommended dosage of horse chestnut extract is 250 milligrams a day. Use it every day regularly, until you see full recovery.
Non of the above suggested treatments are enough to remove the spider vein condition, if you are still exposed to the everyday factors that contribute to spider vein development. To get rid of the spider veins one and for all you need to create a new lifestyle and stick to it.
- If your job requires sitting or standing most of the time you need to make some adjustments. When sitting avoid crossing legs, shile during standing you need to balance your weight from one leg to another.
- Exercise and light workout is always recommended to keep the right body weight
- Wearing high heels should be avoided as much as possible
- When the condition has raised to more concerning level you need to get compression tights. The are prescribed according to the pressure level needed.
- Spice up your food, with cayenne pepper, onion or garlic to help the blood circulation
- Elevate your legs higher than your heart at least 3 times a day, and keep them that way for at least 15 minutes.
