Tea tree oil (also known as melaleuca oil), is an oil derived from the leaves of the Melaleuca alternifolia tree. It contains 92 beneficial compounds and has a fresh camphor smell. The small growing tree is native to New South Wales, Australia and Southeast Queensland, but can now be found in many countries around the world

In the 1920s, Arthur Penfold, an Australian scientist conducted several studies on essential oils which put tea tree oil in the spotlight. Among the 8 species of trees grown for the oil, Melaleuca alternifolia is the most powerful one. The potent cleaning properties of the oil were known to Australian Aboriginals, who cut the leaves and inhaled the vapors to clean their airways. They also used the crushed Melaleuca alternifolia leaves on wounds in order to cool them down and accelerate the healing.
